La floraison (ou « bloom » en anglais) vient de se terminer en Méditerranée. Après un hiver rigoureux où les eaux étaient froides et mélangées le début de réchauffement (même faible cette année ...) a permis au phytoplancton de se développer. Nous avons pu suivre ce développement à partir du flotteur 35b où la concentration en Chlorophylle est passée de 0.1 milligrammes par mètre cube (voir cycle 2, 20 février) à plus de 10 milligrammes par mètre cube (voir cycle 66, 25 avril). Le flotteur 17b, déployé plus tard, montre que la concentration en oxygène a augmenté pendant le bloom en même temps que la concentration en nitrate a baissé ...

The phytoplankton bloomed in the Mediterranean Sea
In the Mediterranean, the bloom just finished. After a harsh winter where the waters have been cold and mixed, the beginning of warming (even though weak this year …) allowed the phytoplankton to develop. We were able to follow this development with the float 35b where the concentration in Chlorophyll passed from 0.1 milligrams per cube meter (see cycle 2, 20th of February) to more than 10 milligrams per cube meter (see cycle 66, 25th of April). The float 17b, deployed a little later, shows that the concentration in oxygen has augmented during the bloom and that the concentration in nitrate lowered at the same time …
